Searching The Database And Using The Data

What types of Course are included in the database?

We use the term 'Course' for convenience. Most of the activities detailed here are called Courses, but some are described as Seminars, Workshops etc. They are all intended for upper middle, senior, and executive level managers - including Directors. We have aimed to list only those courses which run on a regular basis - not 'one-off' activities. We provide details only of Courses of two or more days duration. They are all management education or development courses. The site only provides information on open or public courses - sometimes called 'Open Enrolment' courses. (Masters degree programs, eg MBAs, are not included - please see the The MBA Program Information Site at www.MBAinfo.com for details of such programs)

Searching the Database

You can use any one, or any number of the search criteria. The more you use together, the narrower the search. For example, if you only put a name in the School/University/Organisation box you will get all the courses offered by that Organisation. If you select only a category in the Course Focus Category box you will get all the courses that are available with that subject focus. Remember to reset all the boxes you have used before you do another search.

Searching for a particular Provider

Sometimes Business Schools, are known by their own name - and sometimes by the name of their parent Institution/University. The same applies to other types of organisation. To make it easier for you to find a particular place, you need only put in a name (or in some cases a set of letters) - and the search facility will look for it in all the name categories. To be sure to find what you want you may want to try more than once with different versions of the name - just in case you have only a part of the full name, or the commonly used name is not actually the full name or names have changed.

In the database the School/Dept/Faculty/Unit name is usually the first line of the address - whether that be the name by which the place is known (e.g., the XXX School of Management) or simply the description of a department within an Institution (e.g., the Dept of Management). The Institution/Organisation name is usually the second line of the address

If you are looking for a Course in a particular Subject Focus

We have grouped courses according to their subject focus- the 'Course Subject Category', e.g. General Management, Finance, etc. Each category description covers several related descriptions. These specific descriptions are used in the program listings. We have categorised in this way - simply because there are far too many specific descriptions to use in the search box. The subject categories and what they cover are listed below

CUSTOM COURSES

Courses designed -ie 'tailored'- and run for a particular organisation or a consortium

Courses for specific sectors, types of Organization , managers etc.

In addition to looking for courses in a specific subject area, you can search the database for those courses which have a specific focus, i.e.,

A specific geographical area or region – e.g. courses about managing businesses in China

A specific Sector or Industry - e.g. managing in retailing, public sector

A specific Type of Organisation- e.g. managing a small business

A specific type of Manager – e.g. management for directors, engineers...

Note that most courses will be relevant to managers of different types in different types of organisation etc, Only courses which are relevant to quite specific circumstances are identified by their specific focus.

Looking for a particular Course Duration

The courses in the database are categorized by duration. The categories are <1 ( less than one week), 1,2,3,4 etc weeks. For programs of less than one week, the actual duration of the course in days is shown in the Program details when they are listed for you. In all other cases the duration in weeks is given - note that one week is considered to be from 5 to 7 days. No courses of less than 2 days duration are included in the database.

For non full time courses – the durations given are the total time you will be involved on the course – for example a modular program which has 4, one week modules will be listed with a duration of 4 weeks.

If You Are Looking For a Particular Location

You can search by the Country in which the course is run, the County/State or Province, and the City/Town. Don't just search by one only as it is too easy to miss what you are looking for. Remember some cities - (often capital cities) are not in a County/State etc. and a provider in a State adjacent to such a city might be only a short distance away. In some cases the Country , State and Town are the same. Also remember that spellings may be different in English and the local language, but in the database, all locations are given with their English spellings.

To be sure - search under more than one category

Part Time and Modular Courses

If you are looking for these take care - as the distinction between the two is often not a clear one.. Whilst usually a part time course requires regular attendance for short periods of time - classically one day per week, and a modular course requires less frequent but longer periods of attendance, the descriptions adopted by Providers for their courses sometimes do not reflect this. So you may want to look at both types of course to be sure that you have covered everything of interest to you.

Full Time Courses

All the courses as full time are intended to require the full commitment of the participants, and it is not generally expected that participants will be able to do other things at the some time.. This may be particularly relevant for longer courses which run over weekends . You nay want to check on the weekend work/attendance requirement.

Course frequency and dates

Dates for short courses are sometimes not finalized very far in advance, Sometimes they are changed in order to accommodate another course etc. For this reason we do not show actual course dates – as they could be inaccurate.

You will however want some idea of when a course is likely to run – so we show the number of times the course would normally run each year. The more frequently it runs the greater the possibility that there will be another one available soon. You will however want to check the actual dates with the provider.

Open (ie public), and Custom or Tailored Courses

Most of the courses detailed on the site are open or public courses. However , in addition some organisations offer courses designed or tailored for the needs of particular organisations or consortia. They have no fixed duration, location etc - as their nature is determined by the client organisations needs. The organisations which offer such services are identified in the database - to find them select 'Custom Courses' in the Principal Subject Area on the database search form. Note that if you enter a country in the 'Location of Course - Country' line - that will be the country in which the provider is based - they are likely to offer Custom courses in other countries also.

Interpreting the Data

Where information is not available or was not provided, a '?' is used. If a section is not applicable or relevant, N/A is used.

Most of the telephone and fax numbers are the national numbers - i.e. the numbers to use if you are calling from within the country - but check if you need a leading zero. If you are calling from outside the country you will need to add the international dial code, etc.

Printing the Results

The results of the searches can be printed page-by-page using the printing facilities of your web browser. This can be particularly useful if you require a copy of an individual Course's details for future reference.

Should you experience problems producing legible output with Netscape, review the "Page Setup" options on the "File" menu and set "Black Text" on.
